From David Tarver:

Diane:
Happy Birthday! It is hard to believe we’ve known each other going on 45 years! Doesn’t seem that long ago that you were setting those hard picks behind the Holmdel Village School. I hope you thoroughly enjoy your birthday celebration, and I only wish we could be there to celebrate with you. Looking forward to lifting a glass (or several) next time we are out there. In the meantime I hope you take a few moments to savor your many accomplishments and the admiration of your friends and family – especially the ones who are right there with you.

I’ll be joining your age category in a few months. Looking forward to the next Family Challenge contest.

From Mao Di:

Dear Diane,

Happy birthday to you!

This is the first time on your birthday without your mom. It must be very hard and feel strange. But your mom’s love will always be with you. I can imagine that Aunt Frances is probably up there singing “Happy Birthday to you” and laughing. . . .

Aunt Frances said so many times during our conversations that how much she loved you and how much she appreciated what you did. Yes, I am also your witness and I saw you did so much for everyone, including for me! I am so lucky and grateful to have you in my life. You are my favorite cousin and my role model in life.

Happy Birthday to you, Diane!

祝你生日快乐❤️🥂🎂🎊💕!

Much Love,

Mao Di

Natal anniversary greetings to a “youthful gymnast” who mastered the balance beam by age 15. That same poise, drive, and tenacity is evident, as you faced the balancing act of caregiver and tending to your own health needs. No execution deductions for you! Fortunately, you have several dedicated spotters to help you through the next routine.
With love and encouragement,

Helen

From Liz Mueller:

Having just gone to your Mom’s memorial service, I am remembering all the wonderful stories people told … stories that spoke of her firm and tough opinions, but also her firm and tough love — which permeated all else.

That reminded me of a birthday party we attended at the Chen’s house in Holmdel.  It was probably in the late 80’s and Stacy was 3 or 4 years old.  All the other kids were swarming around the playroom and enjoying their cake and ice cream.  Stacy, however, was still in the dining room with the adults.  “Stacy needs to finish her vegetables before she can have cake,” you explained.

I am not sure of the cause/effect relationship here, but I would guess that Stacy is now the best vegetable eater of all our 9 kids!

Later on in life, I remember you telling Aaron, “be part of the solution, Aaron, not part of the problem.” This is a lesson he learned early, and probably still lives by — although not always happily!

How wonderful that they can be with you today to celebrate your birthday!  In our earlier years, we never wanted to be compared to our mothers.  We wanted to be our own persons!  Now, however, I think you will appreciate the tribute when I repeat the old phrase, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

You were a wonderful daughter, and you are a wonderful mother and wonderful friend.  That tough love your mother showed throughout her life emanates from you as well. I feel honored and privileged to have shared a friendship with you for all these years!

With love,

Liz

From Linda Eno:

What do I love about Diane?

  • She drinks Chardonnay, but only half a glass, so I get the rest.
  • She is the only person in our tennis group with a toss as erratic as mine.
  • She is always up for coming over, eating out, or going for a walk, and never minds if there is a grandchild  in tow.
  • Kids and dogs love her, and they are very good judges of character.
  • She is loyal, smart, and funny: a great friend.

Happy Birthday. my friend.

From Corey Patterson:

It’s been difficult to feel like we can control the things that we are typically accustomed to in the past year, however one thing I am certain of is that you have been able to continue to build foundation of love and belonging in your home that has brought me so much solace. This weekend was yet another reminder of the strength and care that endures within the Mao and Sheng lineage, and the fact that you have truly made me feel like your son and not just a “son-in-law” is a true testament to this notion. This is a special day when we have the opportunity to more overtly or directly celebrate you, but I committed to celebrating you and what you represent each day. Despite the temporary limits that have collectively been placed on us all and those that you have had to endure recently, I hope you were able to make this day truly your’s.  Happy Birthday and I love you!

From Lesley De Dios:

Happy Birthday to my EC Mama!
Looking back at those photos is so bittersweet. I am incredibly grateful for the time, adventures, experiences, food, etc. we were able to share but sad that we’re unable to travel anymore! Thank you for sharing your son with me for the past 5 years and even more so – opening up your home to us these past 5 months. I’ve been reflecting on how unique this time is having us all here living together; the highs and lows and everything in between, we’re able to share it together and that’s pretty special. My mom is quite jealous that you have all us ‘kids’ under one roof! Though this birthday isn’t ideal, know that you are loved and appreciated. Thank you for putting up with us, all of our idiosyncrasies and weirdness – we love you! Happy Birthday 🙂
